Going on an inbound link crusade is a great idea, but before you go crazy finding as many links as possible, remember quality counts. Inbound, relevant links on quality sites are better than many general, low quality links and will have a better impact on your organic search rankings, which will ultimately drive traffic to your website.

Here are a few tips for finding good inbound links:

Site performance: the site on which you create a link to your site should have the same or better performance than your site or the value of the link is decreased and not recognized as a good traffic influence. Use alexa.com to determine a site’s performance and find sites ranking high for the same keywords you use.
Relevancy: for greater influence on your organic rankings, make sure your inbound links are on sites with content relevant to your own. First of all, there will be more targeted prospects on sites like this rather than sites having little or nothing to do with your topic. Second, it just doesn’t count as much to be any old place. For instance, a link on a complementary site is more valuable than a link in your web designer’s portfolio. The first is relevant; the second is nonessential in the scheme of your overall business strategy and in the eyes of search engine crawlers.
Age of site and link: the age of the site you link from is considered in its value along with how long your link has been active. Linking to relatively new sites will not be as influential as linking to well established sites.
Context of the link: when your link appears on a web page that includes your keywords in the content, it has a higher value than appearing on a page filled with other links and no relevant content. Try to find sites where you can at least describe your product or service using keywords or, better yet, be linked in an article or other content-driven web page.

After all your hard work and patience, make sure your links work and point to the best content on your site. There’s always a danger of just slapping together a quick cause-and-effect link to make your point.

Take the conservative Cybercast News Network, for example. Today they crow that traffic to the White House website has “plummeted,” a drop that they say neatly corresponds to Obama’s falling approval ratings.

“According to the web-traffic tracking site Alexa.com, whitehouse.gov was almost the 500th most popular Web site in the world in February. Since then, it has fallen to the 3,732-ranked Web site in the world. Traffic to the site has fallen 51.6 percent in the last three months,” writes CNS reporter Matt Cover.

“The decline in White House’s web traffic has coincided with a decline in the president’s approval ratings and the approval ratings for his policies,” he adds, citing a Zogby poll showing that President Obama’s approval rating has dropped from 51 percent in mid-June to 48 percent now.

Hold on. As the former E-communications director of the White House during President George W. Bush’s first term, I became familiar with traffic patterns. Some things were easy to explain. For example (and this will surprise few), the more unique and interesting content you put on the site, the more traffic you’ll get.

Also, not surprisingly, bad news – which usually means a dip in approval ratings – means an increase in traffic.

In order for the website to remain relevant during the long periods of time where President Bush had high approval ratings, unique content and innovative applications had to be churned out.

Online interactive chats worked very well. By allowing people to interact with members of the White House and the Bush administration in “Ask the White House” chats, the Bush White House saw traffic spike. And placing unique video content on the site – like tours of the White House and Air Force One or interviews with residential staff who claimed to have seen Lincoln’s ghost – also helped traffic increase.

We’ve seen the Obama administration do some cool things too. Live video town halls, for instance, while over-staged, are an excellent way to interact with the public. As time goes by, team Obama could ditch the studio audience altogether and just have the president talk to citizens from a webcam in the Oval Office.

So what’s behind the traffic roller coaster? Many variables play into it. Let’s look at a few.

1. Hope and change. Agree with the direction of the Obama administration or not, there was a lot of excitement with the changing of the guard. With all the interest, higher traffic was inevitable. But, like anything, the novelty wears off. These numbers are naturally going to fall.

2. It’s a shiny new toy. The Obama campaign was known for being tech-savvy. It ran a smart Internet campaign, and people on both sides of the aisle were looking forward to seeing how this would translate into a government website. Unless the end result was truly revolutionary, these numbers were going to fall.

3. It’s summertime. No matter how important or interesting the content is that’s put up on any website, traffic decreases during the warmer months. People are outside and focused on other things.

Like it or not, Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle’s perfect game is going to attract a lot more interest than Vice President Biden’s trip to Philadelphia to discuss the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (even if you call it by its exciting acronym – ARRA). If Biden’s teleprompter fell over again, you’d see a huge spike in traffic. People love faulty teleprompters.

4. Burnout. Now that the presidential election cycle is a full two years long, people want a break from politics. Look at the numbers from President Obama’s last news conference. Way down. The diehards are paying attention, but the rest want a vacation.

5. Lack of consistently unique content. By having frequent video Q & A’s with the public, traffic would soar. Getting this through the bureaucracy at the White House isn’t easy. Senior White House brass need to be sold on the idea that these informal live video interactions with citizens would pay off. But if you sell Rahm Emanuel on the idea, it is fait accompli.

I contacted my former colleague Max Everett about this too to see what he thought. Max and I worked the 2000 and 2004 Republican conventions together. He later would become the CIO at the White House.

He agrees. The approval rating/decrease in traffic correlation doesn’t work.

Millions of people across the world used the internet to watch Michael Jackson's memorial service in Los Angeles yesterday, although the surge in web traffic did not beat the previous record held by Barack Obama's inaugaration as US president in January.

Jackson's shock death on 25 June saw many websites buckle under the sheer weight of traffic, although the internet fared better during yesterday's memorial service.

Global web traffic was at least 19% above normal during most of the event at the Staples Center, according to Akamai Technologies, a Massachusetts-based firm that handles 20% of the world's web traffic. It said the Jackson memorial brought the internet's second largest day ever in terms of total traffic.

"When a public figure of global prominence such as Michael Jackson passes away, the public's desire for up-to-date information and news is rarely satiated," said Robert Hughes, executive vice-president of global sales, services and marketing at Akamai.

CNN said its own website recorded 9.7 million live video streams on Tuesday between noon and 5pm LA time (8pm-1am, UK time) although the news site's all-time viewership record for a full day stands at almost 27 million video streams for Obama's inauguration on 20 January.

The CNN website also partnered with Facebook to let friends and family share commentary while watching Jackson's memorial service live online, yielding about 6,000 status updates a minute.

CNN.com and Facebook entered into a similar collaboration during Obama's inauguration, although Facebook saw twice as many status updates during that event.

Other US websites, including CBSNews.com, ABCNews.com, FoxNews.com and Hulu.com, also hosted live streaming coverage of the service, as did the BBC in the UK. Hulu reported that Tuesday was its second-highest live video streaming day after the Obama inauguration.

The BBC News channel's live stream was accessed 410,000 times via the BBC News website in the UK, according to the corporation.

On Twitter the 10 most popular topics yesterday afternoon were also all connected to Jackson's memorial, with the term "Michael Jackson" alone generating 80,000 tweets per hour.

My best answer for that is when you do the FREE stuff it is very time consuming and like the old saying says you get what you pay for and let me be the first to tell you it's not FREE it's ether gonna cost you a little money or a lot of time what I've been using that works very well is offline methods the competition is a lot less competitive and you can fly under the radar nobody can steel your ads or anything that you market.

A percentage of Google traffic is stripped of identifying information. Why?

Google likes to portray itself as a company that does everything in the open. But it appears that at least some of its employees are harboring a secret.

Web researcher Net Applications recently discovered that between 11% to 30% of traffic streaming out of Google's (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) Mountain View, Calif., office is stripped clean of the usual identifying information that accompanies such traffic. That begs the question: What secret is it that Google doesn't want the rest of the Web to know?

The finding, first reported in InternetNews.com, quickly sparked online chatter about a Windows challenger in the works. "I'd be shocked if Google wasn't developing its own operating system," says Vince Vizzacarro, Net Applications' executive vice president of marketing. "They clearly want to ride online services without using Microsoft."

The Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based firm made the discovery after adding a new feature to its analytics software that pinpoints the source of Internet traffic down to a specific company. The technology, which tracks various trends in Internet usage by analyzing traffic to more than 40,000 Web sites around the world, can also detect a computer's browser, IP address, referring search engine or search term, default language and screen resolution.

The new data showed that a percentage of Internet users in Google's offices (principally based in the company's Mountain View headquarters) are using an operating system that essentially shields itself from detection by stripping traffic of identifying information. Vizzacarro describes this data, known as a user agent, as a string of information that a computer uses to identify itself. Removing it (possibly via a proxy server) means that outsiders like Net Applications can't tell which operating system a particular Web user is using. Net Applications could be detecting something other than a secret OS, of course. Its algorithms may be picking up on Google's robots that crawl and grab content from the Web, for instance. Or the veiled traffic could be a holdover from Google's two-year-long, super-secret incubation of Chrome. Since the "company of origin" feature is new, Net Applications can only trace data back three weeks in time.

Since Net Applications doesn't yet separate mobile traffic from desktop computer searches, the results could also stem from Google employees surfing the Web on Android phones. But Vizzacarro says that the first scenario would likely produce far more traffic than 11%, while the latter two would probably produce less. "We know it's not their spider," he says. "Unless they have a group of engineers working on a project, it doesn't seem to add up."

Another explanation could be that Google is employing an OS that simply doesn't provide user agent detail. In that scenario, the missing information could be viewed as an optional field that was left blank.

Net Applications plans to release more detailed results to clients in a month. That could include companies like Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ), Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ), Adobe (nasdaq: ADBE - news - people ) and Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ). Tech firms will likely want the data, Vizzacarro says, because knowing what companies like Google are using internally could help them sell to or partner with them.

Until then, the mystery of Google's invisibility cloak is likely to linger.

Web traffic and sales see double digit growth

The numbers for online shopping on Monday, which is known as "Cyber Monday," because of the millions of consumers shopping online for gifts, are in and two surveys report double digit growth in Web traffic and sales over last year.

Nielsen Online reports that 35.9 million people visited holiday shopping sites on Monday, a 10 percent increase over Cyber Monday last year. Traffic to sites selling beauty products grew the most (151 percent), while traffic to sites selling toys and video games came in second (112 percent).

Meanwhile, comScore reported that $846 million was spent on Cyber Monday, a 15 percent increase over last year. Online spending during the four-day period from Black Friday through Cyber Monday was also up 13 percent. However, total online shopping this holiday season is still down 2 percent compared to the same period last year.

comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said in a statement that the numbers are a positive sign for retailers, but it remains to be seen if online spending will remain strong throughout the holiday season.

“Mark Twain might have said: ‘Rumors of the death of online holiday shopping have been greatly exaggerated’,” comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni said in a statement. “Consumers are clearly responding positively to retailers’ aggressive online discounts. With Cyber Monday promotions beginning in earnest over the Thanksgiving weekend, consumers have finally begun to open their wallets, setting off a streak of four consecutive days of extremely strong growth, and culminating in a Cyber Monday that racked up an impressive $846 million in online spending, up 15 percent over last year and ranking it as the second heaviest online spending day on record. This is an extremely encouraging development for retailers and we can but hope that their aggressive discounting has still left room for profits.”

If the recession is giving would-be shoppers second thoughts about their trip to the mall, it evidently isn't keeping them off their computers.

Portland-based Integra Telecom Inc., which provides Internet service to small and midsize businesses across the West, reported a 30 percent jump in Web traffic Monday, as compared with a typical Monday.

That's roughly the same percentage jump Integra recorded on the Monday after Thanksgiving last year.
Although Integra doesn't know which sites those Web surfers were visiting or what -- if anything -- they bought, the spike in traffic suggests the Cyber Monday phenomenon is alive and well despite the sour economy.

Cyber Monday is the online analog to Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when popular mythology says hordes of holiday shoppers push retailers into the black. Theoretically, however, some of the traffic may well be coming from the retailers themselves, as they bombard prospective shoppers with promotional e-mail.

In the digital age, Web retailers report that online customers wait until they're back at work before starting to check off their holiday gift list.

As high-speed Internet connections proliferate in U.S. homes, shoppers are less reliant on office computers to access shopping sites. But online buyers still seem to prefer to shop on their employer's time rather than their own.

"You can't argue with the numbers," said John Nee, Integra's vice president for communications. "There's surely something going on, and it seems pretty consistent."

Online Traffic Bodes Well For Cyber Monday

Holiday shoppers aren't just snapping up bargains in stores this weekend — they're prowling the Internet, too. Online shopping traffic was up 10 percent on Black Friday, according to Nielsen Online — a good initial sign for retailers in a shaky economy.

Shopping online is still nowhere near as popular as shopping in stores. But it's been growing fast over the past decade — about 20 percent a year. This year, with the weak economy, some predictions called for no growth at all.

"So 10 percent is actually a pretty good number in the grand scheme of things," says Ken Cassar, an analyst with Nielsen Online.

Nielsen tracked visits to 120 online retailers. Data on visits that resulted in orders won't be available for awhile, but Cassar says that even if the number of orders is up, each order may be for a smaller amount than last year.

The real kickoff for online sales, though, is not Black Friday, but Cyber Monday.

"Consumers get back to work after either relaxing or going to brick-and-mortar stores during the holiday season," Cassar says. "And we do see a material uptick in sales."

Online shoppers have become accustomed to reduced or free shipping during the holiday season — and sometimes, reduced prices if they wait. Cassar says they can expect shipping discounts again this year. As for holding out — that might work if it's not a superhot item.

"If you're looking to buy a Wii, for example, you might not want to play games," he says. "Whereas if you're looking for something like a flat-panel television, the consumer may have a little bit more ability to win that game of brinksmanship."

Online shopping typically increases as the days go on, until the busiest online day — the third Monday after Thanksgiving. This year, that's Dec. 15 — pretty close to the last day shoppers can place an order and be sure it arrives by Christmas.

...Says Analysys Mason, Mobile network operators in developed regions should prepare for a 10fold increase in wireless network traffic by 2015, as data traffic rapidly overtakes voice, according to the latest report entitled Wireless network traffic 2008-2015: forecasts and analysis from Analysys Mason, the premier advisers on telecoms, IT and digital media ( www.analysysmason.com).

Total wireless network traffic from cellular users in developed regions is set to increase substantially, driven by: improved cellular devices (such as USB modems and smartphones); widespread deployment of advanced 3G technologies and femtocells; affordable pricing (particularly for traffic-intensive services); more indoor usage of cellular devices; and increasing size of items of Web content.

"While developed regions will account for just 25% of the cellular user population by 2015, they will generate 65% of total global wireless network traffic", according to Dr Mark Heath, the report's co-author. "This is due to a higher proportion of advanced handsets and the earlier deployment of more advanced cellular technologies, such as LTE, which have higher throughput."

Key findings of the new report include:

-- Historically, voice telephony has dominated wireless network traffic, and popular data services, such as SMS, consume a tiny amount of network resource. However, the take-up of USB modems and a broad range of data services on smartphones will increase wireless network traffic. Average wireless network traffic per cellular user (for all voice and data services) in developed regions will increase to eight times its 2008 level by 2015, rising from 56MB per month to 455MB per month.

-- While voice traffic will continue to increase, as a result of on-going fixed-mobile substitution, data traffic will rise at significantly faster and come to dominate wireless network traffic. By 2015, data will account for 94% of total wireless network traffic in developed regions.

-- A number of uncertainties could result in traffic levels differing from our base-case forecasts. An upside forecast derived by Analysys Mason indicates that by 2015, traffic per customer in developed regions will grow to almost 30 times its level in 2008.

"Strong take-up of USB modem services could result in traffic per cellular customer increasing to as much as 23 times its 2008 level by 2015. Mobile operators may need networks that are able to support a huge increase in traffic, and should review their strategies towards USB modem services," says Dr Alastair Brydon, the report's co-author. "In the short-term, underutilisation of 3G networks allows mobile operators to offer low-cost USB services, but operators may be forced to rethink their strategies when they are confronted by the need to make further network investment."

Through Chrome can see all website traffic soon?

Hey Folk... Google could be preparing to increase its grip on website traffic by preinstalling its new Chrome browser on new PCs.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer has dominated this software plateau in recent history, but comments by Sundar Pichai, Google vice president, may have even Bill Gates himself quaking in his boots.

In an interview with the Times, Mr Pichai indicated that Chrome could be ready for pre-installation on PCs by as early as January 2009.

He told the newspaper: "We will probably do distribution deals.

"We could work with an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and have them ship computers with Chrome pre-installed."

Of course we all know it would take some clout to knock Internet Explorer from its top spot, which currently dominates the web browser market.

But surprisingly, even smaller web browser suppliers remain unfazed by the mighty Google.

When asked whether there was concern revenue for the web browser Firefox would dry up following the introduction of Chrome, Mitchell Baker, chairman of the Mozilla Foundation, remained defiant.

She told cnet news: "Our market share continues to grow, and we expect it to be healthy."

Highest Traffic Of Network Web Sites

NBC had the top traffic among network Web sites for the week ending Nov. 8, according to monitoring service Hitwise.

NBC.com claimed a 29.39% share of visits to broadcast network Web sites, followed by PBS.org with 21.78%; ABC.go.com with 27.41%; CBS.com with 20.75%; Fox (an aggregation of several sties) at 13.32%; The CW with 8.35%; and MyNetworkTV at .78%..

The top show site was NBC's Deal Or No Deal (7.28%). Dancing With the Stars was second with 6.08% of traffic, up from third place the week before.

Rounding out the top five show sites were Heroes at 5.54%; America's Most Wanted at 4.84%, and The Office at 4.56%.

Hitwise bases its numbers on a sample of over 10 million Internet users.

According to the company's Wednesday announcement, Netcraft has created an Excel spreadsheet that provides a variety of different filters and selections using data taken from users of the Netcraft Toolbar. The dataset helps a hosting company identify its relative position and closest competitors in each of the top 10,000, 100,000 and one million tiers of site traffic, but it is also divided by region, country, and operating system.

This is an excerpt of Netcraft's dataset showing data organized into different tiers.

Netcraft found that although the top 1000 sites show a large concentration of online superpowers such as Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and EBay, the hosting locations of the top million sites are widely fragmented. Of the top million sites, United Internet took top spot, followed by ThePlanet, OVH Net, Google and Rackspace.

Netcraft said its data is not influenced by parked domains, personal sites, shared hosting accounts or the majority of blogs. However, there are limitations on accuracy given that the data is taken from Netcraft Toolbar user usage.

Also, finding a site's hosting location requires successful DNS lookup on a site's IP address, meaning that if the DNS lookup fails, the hosting location will be unknown. As well, the dataset does not give access to the underlying web site hostnames; however, selections of site details including hostnames, hosting location, operating system, web server software, traffic and content technologies may be purchased separately.

The dataset will be updated monthly and is available on a company license basis.

The anonymous 25-year-old man who's, well, uninitiated in the ways of love. His website, Help a Virgin, has gotten significant attention over the last couple of days. The deal, assuming it's not all a hoax: His girlfriend (that is, a friend who is a girl -- a relationship that has been, so far, totally platonic) agreed to do him a favor by alleviating his carnal deficiency as long as the website receives 5 million hits by New Year's Eve. If he doesn't reach his goal, he'll have to do "anything she wants for a whole month."

Thanks to some attention from Reddit, the social news website, Help a Virgin has seen a major surge in Web traffic. The site has been up since at least the summer (the last time it was updated was July), but after it hit Reddit's front page on Sunday, the traffic counter has more than doubled -- to 80,000 and rising. At this rate, his scheme won't succeed (he wouldn't even get half the target number) so he'll definitely need some additional attention. (He didn't respond to my e-mail requests for an interview, but, then again, I'm not a woman.)

He wouldn't be the first to chalk up a failed attempt at Internet-assisted intimacy. Cargo8, a user of the popular social news site Digg, made his plea for a prom date earlier this year. The post includes a photo of him holding poster boards with his proposal written on them. Diggers supported him, giving more than 14,000 votes to the post, but his love interest didn't reciprocate. Ouch.

Internet proposals don't always end in heartbreak, however. Michael Weiss-Malik, a Google software engineer, popped the question using the Google Maps' panoramic Street View feature. In the street-level photos, he can be seen standing in front of the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., holding a sign that reads "Marry Me Leslie." She said yes. But, to be fair, he did ask her beforehand, the old-fashioned way -- in person, during a quiet night at home, engagement ring and all.

27% surge in news website traffic is sparked by US election

"In the finale of the first truly digital presidential campaign, with a record turnout of more than 136 million Americans casting votes, voters flocked online to follow news and election results and to play with electoral college math," Nielsen Online said in a statement.

Therefore, , according to new figures, Web Traffic to news websites soared by 27% on US election day on November 4th, it's compared w/ a week ago.

Released by Nielsen Online, the statistics showed that almost 42.4 million American web users visited a news site on Tuesday, up from nearly 33.5 million last week.

Page views soared by 103 per cent to reach 868.3 million, while the average amount of time spent on news sites per person came to 19 minutes and 51 seconds compared with 12 minutes and 22 seconds in the previous week.

CNN, MSNBC and Yahoo! News topped the list of the most visited news sites, followed by Fox News, AOL News, the New York Times and Google News.

Recent figures from comScore showed that UK traffic to political websites increased by 27 per cent during September, thanks to growing interest in the US election.

Hi Folk, Let me share with you...Half of the top twenty most popular websites don't work well on mobile phones, even though up to five percent of visitors are now coming from mobile devices, according to a study conducted by Bango.

It seems despite all the hype about the iPhone, most people are still using mass market phones from Nokia (NYSE: NOK - News), Samsung, Sony (NYSE: SNE - News) Ericsson (NasdaqGS: ERIC - News) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT - News). Bango, which provides tools for mobile analytics, said this continues to be an ongoing problem because most publishers don't know how much traffic is coming from phones, but Bango's research shows that between three to ten percent "of on-line traffic to a PC website now comes from users entering web addresses on their mobile device."

These tests were conducted on the Motorola V3 Razr and the Nokia 6400 on the AT&T (NYSE: T - News) network in the U.S. and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD - News) network in the U.K. Bango detailed some of the findings on its blog:

I started a consulting business months ago, and before I created a web site for it I read much of this book. I expected that many of my clients would find me by using Internet search engines, so I minded some of the techniques and principles explained in this book as I designed my web site. And boy did it pay off. Using a simple, forty dollar application, I created and published a web site that quickly jumped to the top of Google's search results for key phrases that prospective clients have been using to find a consultancy like mine. I bet my competitors who had been around much longer than my business must have been P.O.'d big time. But I suppose that's what they get for failing to do their homework!
I'd elaborate on the content of the book, but other reviewers have done that; and ultimately it's the results that count, right?
I can honestly say that buying this book has been the most profitable investment I've made in my business thus far.

This book is great for both the corporate marketer with big resources AND the small business trying to grow big on the cheap (that would be us). Includes explanations of terms, sources for web tools, walks you through how to measure the success of your campaign efforts and even rationale for gaining buy-in in the corporate setting. Yes, it is detailed and comprehensive (off-putting for some) but simply focus on the issues of importance for you. Our website, [...], could be better, but we did avoid many pitfalls of internet marketing thanks to this book. It also helped us in working with our outsourced webmaster, who is not an SEO expert. Also check out Do It Wrong QuicklyDo It Wrong Quickly: How the Web Changes the Old Marketing Rules (IBM Press), which I am reading now.

I purchased this book 2 months ago with the intention of trying to move my website up in the search engine rankings. I think every person that is responsible for search engine marketing dreams about what being ranked on the first page of Google would mean to your respective business. When I started this book my website was not ranked within the top 100 results on Google. Now we are on the first page for our targeted keywords. There is no question that optimizing your web site for the search engines is a lot of work and that it takes a very diligent effort to do it the right way. Showing you how to optimize your site the right way is what this book is all about. In truth, to me the book is worth 10 times what I paid for it. If you are interested in setting your web site up for success then this book is a must have.

While the text material is great, there is more to Marketing than
SEO.

Marketing on Web2.0 is as effective in my opinion. I am not a fan of
Banners. Blogging is going to be huge.

I'm a staff member of an anime site called which is a really great site for anime fans. It has everything from english dubbed animes to anime games and music. We seem to not get a lot of traffic and if that keeps up...the owner of the site is shutting it down..SO what can I do or YOU do to help me and the site out..?

I think you should make a squidoo lense about your site. Write a huge article about the contents of your site, what makes it different from other sites and why you think people should check it out. You can also add other modules to this lense as you see fit. I recommend Squidoo because it is a powerful marketing tool. A good, content-rich lense hast the potential to send a lot of traffic to your site – but don’t forget to include a link to your page somewhere in the lense ;)

Another thing I would recommend you in order to get fast, free traffic is posting classified ads with a link to your site on craigslist and other free classifieds sites. You can also sign up for a gold membership on USFreeads (another popular classifieds site) for 10 Dollars a year. If you do this, you should write 25 smaller articles (you can use & alter the text from your squidoo lense – you don’t have to write everything anew. The Gold Membership also enables you to include picture in your ads. So you may want to include a screenshot of the site in some of these ads.) and link some of them to your website and the rest to the squidoo lense. This will increase the google rank of both the site itself and the Squidoo lense which links to your site anyway, thus drawing a huge amount of traffic to your site.

If you are really passionate about this site you speak of, you should be able to pull this off. Or in other words: Believe it! ;)

Firstly, you need knowledge of HTML. If you already have that, then you can go to www.piczo.com or www.freewebs.com & register for a free website. Piczo is easier than freewebs & is recomended for a beginner. As you feel confident enough, you can purchase a domain(.com) &/or get yourself a subdomain. That requires knowledge of FTP (file transfer protocol), which isnt too hard.

As for getting advertisements and making online money, the safest is google adsense. No matter where u live, they wire the money to you. You have to register & follow their rules. If you do, they give u a code. Place that code on ur website. If your visitors click on it, you make dollars. Once you earn 100$, they send you the money :) There are other websites that offer advertisements, but they arent too safe. Stick to Google adsense.

Yes. 300~600 words is the best choice, but to get better SEO, you need to focus on the keyword density as well :)

But, word count is not so important for the SEO. Important is keyword density regarding specific page and whole website.

Just try to make your content informative and keywords rich, good to start with optimization on both yahoo and google.

That seems like a lot. You can have lots of keywords for your SEO, but they might not compliment your website. If you go to Google Adwords you can type in your website and Google will list keywords based on your website and what people search for.

Are there any affordable or cheap web sites out there that can bring your site more unique visits?

SEO is a great tactic, as well as SMO (Social Media Optimization). Thic inculdes posting interesting content on sites like Facebook, Myspace, Digg, LinkedIn, etc., to get people to click through. This also helps with Page Rank, as long as its used with relevant content.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a great way to drive traffic that is organic and will actually allow you to convert. Be wary of other methods that are frowned upon by Google/Yahoo such as online indexes and directories that can actually demote your page rank. You really want high quality back links. I found my best bet was to hire a firm that specialized in this. I actually used Barlam Enterprises.

I think, the www.alexa.com is the best way to know the web traffic all website. It is support all country domains. dnscoop is also a good tool to know your websites statics. There is a draw back of alexa is that it is only shows record of those websites who is below 100,000 in its ranking or must be listed in alexa.

What is the average amount of traffic that someone can expect from writing and submitting free reprint articles to article directories in a fairly competitive field?

I have heard it a million times over the last 10 years of teaching and doing internet marketing research for people!

Free reprint articles... don't expect much... everyone is reprinting them and between duplicate data issues, and poor keyword density issues... your not likely to get much at all...

There is only one way to get actual numbers and i woldn't rely on them on their own at all.... that said, that is to out seo your competitors and track your results... using something like google analytics...

The only way to tell what the previous numbers look like is to look at the value inherent in the keywords via wordtracker at www.wordtracker.com

i.e. Keyword example:

If the keyword is "spare change storage container"

You want to know
1) how many daily searches are done (i.e. 24hr = 32) 2)
2)how many relevant results are returned (competing = 1900784) 3) what are the quality of those results...

Thats indicators that will give you some numbers to work with... but they change daily so you need to track over 60 days to get numbers to start relying on... and scientifically you need 1000 results to get a good guesstimate on anything...

Maybe you have tried some SEO techniques and link exchanges, but your web traffic is still very low. Someone told me they used to buy visitors for there web site.

Yeh...Buy web traffic have a Good News & and Bad News. Good news is that buying visitors for your web site is actually pretty cheap. You can usually get 1000 visitors for as little as $3. Bad news is that if you are selling a product, the traffic does not convert as well as other means of getting visitors to your site. However, My friend use this method to regularly get traffic to his sites and find it to be fairly profitable. He think it depends on where you get the traffic from (some providers are better than others). My friend use http://www.buy-site-traffic.com because they offer options that let him accurately target which visitors he want them to send him.

For example, I sell a product that earns me $20 for each sell. The traffic I buy only converts at a rate of about .5% (pretty low). However, that means I usually get 4 or 5 sales for every 1000 visitors I buy giving be a nice $77 to $97 profit. Not too shabby. If you sell a product, then I think you will be able to make some decent money using this approach. That's my friend say :)

So the question of how much and how long to deliver really depends on the quality of the traffic you are after. If you don't care of the quality then it can probably be delivered over a couple of weeks (I would be wary of dumping all the traffic to your site in 48 hours). The more niche you want your targeting the longer it will take (and the more it will cost.)

If you are buying this type of traffic, just double check your objectives vs. what you are buying. So if you need to boost visitors to your site (as opposed to visits) you need to ensure you are buying unique visitors on your advertising campaign which is not standard for these type of deals (it can be done but also may increase cost and delivery duration.)

You may also want to think about buying from more than one provider to get different types of traffic, and don't forget to track it.

Hey folk, if too much web traffic, it can be dramatically slow down or even prevent all access to a web site. This is caused by more file requests going to the server than it can handle and may be an intentional attack on the site or simply caused by over-popularity. With Large scale web sites with numerous servers can often cope with the traffic required and it is more likely that smaller services are affected by traffic overload.

Denial of service attacks

Yeah...Denial-of-service attacks (DoS attacks) have forced web sites to close after a malicious attack, flooding the site with more requests than it could cope with. Viruses have also been used to co-ordinate large scale distributed denial-of-service attacks.

Sudden popularity

This will happen also, a sudden burst of publicity may accidentally cause a web traffic overload. A news item in the media, a quickly propagating email, or a link from a popular site may cause such a boost in visitors (sometimes called Slashdot effect) that overwhelms the site.

Then web sites have been forced to close after an unexpected mass increase of traffic, particularly those run by an individual leasing the bandwidth from an ISP or hosting site.
